Kiss Me Kate
10th April - 14th April 2007

Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter - Book by Bella and Sam Spewack

This classic Cole Porter musical was first performed in 1948, and includes some of the composer's favourite songs.

When he was first asked to write the score for a musical based on Shakespeare's play "The Taming of the Shrew", Cole Porter was apprehensive that such a production would be too highbrow for Broadway audiences.  However, he succeeded magnificently. 'Kiss Me Kate' ran in New York for over 1000 performances and, in 1949, became the first musical to be awarded a coveted Tony award.

The 1999 version of 'Kiss Me Kate' takes the original score from the 1948 version  and re-scored and re-orchestrated it for a modern theatre pit band.  All the original songs are present as well as 'From This Moment On' from the 1953 version of the show.
