- Lyrics by Al Dublin - Book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes, 42nd Street employs that theatrical favourite 'a show within a show'. Set in 1933 the characters take you through many entertaining scenarios from the tiring rehearsals and backstage squabbles to the spectacular song and dance routines of the final show; 'Pretty Lady', when a young girl becomes a star after the original leading lady is injured. Originally a novel, then a film in 1933, with dazzling routines choreographed by Busby Berkeley, the musical version opened on Broadway in 1980. A London production opened four years later, and ran for four and half years before going on a national tour, returning for a further season in London in 1991. |
